Safest Cars of 2014
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety upped their standards this year by adding a rigorous fifth test to the curriculum, but it’s not stopping Subaru models from achieving the highest possible ratings. Two more 2014 models just received Top Safety Pick+ ratings from the IIHS. The 2014 Subaru Impreza and the XV Crosstrek now join the Forester, Legacy and Outback as Top Safety Pick+ rated vehicles. The ratings help to foreshadow the fact that Subaru vehicles will be the safest cars of 2014.
If Subaru continues the streak with the remaining models it will be the fourth consecutive year that all of their models will have earned the highest possible IIHS safety rating. Subaru is the only manufacturer to ever have held that honor.
In order to earn the Top Safety Pick+ rating, the vehicle must pass four out of five tests with the highest rating of “good,” and score no less than “acceptable” in the fifth. All five of the Subaru models that were put through the tests scored “good” in all five tests except for the Outback which received an “acceptable” rating in the small overlap front test.
The small overlap front test is the newest addition, and it’s also the most difficult to pass. The test replicates what happens when a small portion of the vehicle’s front corner hits another object like a tree or utility pole. To test this, 25 percent of the front end of the driver side is rammed into a five-foot tall barrier at 40 mph.
It’s difficult to pass because the crash creates an awkward trajectory for the passenger. Rather than being thrown forward or to the side, the driver moves diagonally. This makes it difficult for the airbags to stop the driver. It’s also difficult because the bulky engine is not there to help absorb the impact—that all comes down to the strength of the frame.
Many of these Top Safety Pick+ vehicles are available in our new car inventory. If you’re interested in learning more about their safety before you check them out, you can view our blog where we are always providing you with information about anything and everything related to Subaru.
